London to Cape York Results for Tunehouse tuned VC Commodore

Tunehouse Tuned Commodore Takes 2nd in Class!

Congratulations to the Australian team of Greg and Sam Newton for taking 2nd in class in the gruelling London to Cape Town Rally held from January 1st through to 29th 2012. The Holden VC Commodore was prepared in the lead up to the event and then finally tuned by Tunehouse’s own Jim Ghelis in the days prior to leaving Australia for the London start of the rally.

The car isn’t exactly a show car and it wasn’t meant to win any dyno competitions but what it did deliver was strong power, reliability and consistency over  14,400 km’s, 13 countries and 3 continents. Actually finishing an even like this is a fair feat let alone making the podium!

After being waived out of the parliamentary buildings in Westminster; Greg and Same drove the VC Commodore through a maze of European and African countries including France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia and finally South Africa for the final stretch into Cape Town.

The car itself even had some history up its sleeve having originally been built to the same specs as the 1980 Around Australia Rally Holden Dealer team VB Commodores at the time. A few years has expired since the car was first commissioned however it hit this event with a range of mods:

  • Holden VK Black 3.3 litre www.mindanews.com/buy-ventolin/ motor fully balanced and blueprinted with Hypereutectic pistons, Crowe cam and 2 barrel Weber putting out a mild 155bhp – Tunehouse Tuned of course!
  • Power steering but no pollution gear, air conditioning or heating
  • 5 speed Toyota Supra Gearbox and heavy duty clutch
  • Fully enclosed VL Commodore turbo 3.78:1 Diff with fine spline axles
  • Nissan Skyline crown wheel and pinion
  • 15” x 6” late model wheels with offroad tyres
  • Full seam welded body – all underbody and suspension reinforced, re-welded and foam filled
  • Hi lift Bilstein rally shocks and springs – air adjustable at rear
  • Custom built interior with VK bucket seats, SAAS wheel and stacks of electrical outlets
  • Custom built and designed rally exhaust system
  • 4 wheel disc brakes with upgraded rotors and callipers
  • Hydraulic hand brake and power steering fitted
  • 100 litre long range alloy fuel tank
  • CAMS spec welded steel 10 point roll cage tied into body and suspension mountings
  • Steel bull bar with full under-body bash plates
  • Branz and Monit rally meters
  • Terraphone rally intercom – driver / navigator
  • Interior navigation light along with LED boot and bonnet lights
  • 4 Cibie spotlights bolted to comprehensive front bull bar for lions, tigers and larger beasts

Needless to say Tunehouse is extremely proud to be associated with the success and what these two guys have accomplished and already can’t wait to hear of their next planned adventure in the trusty old VC Commodore!
